«RESTORATION OF THE CATHEDRAL PILLAR OF STRASBOURG»
In 1903, the tower of Strasbourg Cathedral was in danger of collapsing. In a unique monument conservation measure, the pillar under the north tower was therefore renovated between 1906 and 1926, until 1918 under the direction of the cathedral's master builder Johann Knauth, and after the First World War under French direction.
The architectural-historical analysis of the surviving sources shows that, beyond the national rhetoric, the engineering achievement consisted of an accumulation of technical knowledge in the field of reinforced concrete and restoration science. A project that was probably only possible in this form in the border city of Strasbourg.
