As one of the oldest institutes in the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning, the Institute of Architectural History (ifag) was already equipped with its own teaching collection and library when it was founded in 1911. These formed the starting point for the Institute's own collections, which have been subject to a constant process of growth, loss and restructuring over the last 100 years. Today, the ifag holds extensive holdings on various aspects of architecture and construction, which can be used to trace the development of architectural teaching in Stuttgart since the 19th century.
The collections comprise three large sub-collections: a collection of plans with historical building photographs, the Paul Bonatz archive, architectural drawings and prints; a collection of historical architectural books; and an image archive with a slide library. The objects and media of various types date from the 16th to the 21st century, with a focus on the 19th and 20th centuries.
